Messy Charcoal Warm Up
Come along with me as I show you how I often warm up with a messy charcoal intuitive portrait.
Over the past few years I’ve lost count of how many intuitive portraits I’ve drawn or painted….I just love doing them and always look forward to who will turn up to greet me at the end.
So for me, I often do one of these as a way of warming up and find it’s a great way to help get my brain into the ‘art zone’, especially after a full week of teaching music.

This week I thought I’d invite you to come along with me as I give you a glimpse into how I approach doing these intuitive, no reference warm up portraits.
Materials Used:
Mixed Media paper A4 200gsm
Willow Charcoal
Compressed Charcoal
Charcoal powder
Kneaded eraser
Water Spray Bottle
Paper Towel
I hope you enjoyed watching this messy charcoal warm up. If you do warm ups to help you get into the arty zone, I’d love to hear what your go to subject and medium is!
Have a beautiful week with lots of moments of creating and making art sprinkled throughout your days. Until next time….

Wow Loretta, I loved watching her take shape in real time, how you travel around the page and most importantly how no move was a bad one !
My favourite way to warm up as you know is with a non dominant hand drawing, I find it relaxing, amusing & always fun during and after . I’m sure there is an explanation for why it has this effect on me ?
